For women in leadership, communication is more than just a soft skill; it is a strategic tool for driving results, building influence, and shaping culture. Strategic communication is the intentional and thoughtful use of communication to achieve a specific business objective.

What Is Strategic Communication?

Strategic communication is about aligning your communication with your leadership goals. It involves asking yourself three key questions before you communicate:

  1. What is my objective? What do I want my audience to think, feel, or do as a result?
  2. Who is my audience? What are their needs, motivations, and concerns?
  3. What is the most effective way to deliver my message? What channel, tone, and style will be most impactful?

The 3 Pillars of Strategic Communication

1. Audience-Centric Messaging

  • The WIIFM Principle: Your audience is always asking "What's In It For Me?" Frame your message around their interests and needs.
  • Tailoring Your Language: Adjust your language and level of detail based on your audience. A board presentation should be high-level; a team presentation should be detailed and operational.

2. Building Alliances and Influence

  • Stakeholder Mapping: Before launching a major initiative, map out your key stakeholders and understand their interests, influence, and motivations.
  • The Power of the One-on-One: Have one-on-one conversations with key stakeholders before a major decision is made to build support and address concerns.

3. Leading Through Narrative

  • The Vision Story: Paint a vivid picture of the future to get your team excited about a new direction.
  • The "Why" Story: Share a story that illustrates the purpose and impact of your team's work.
  • The Vulnerability Story: Share your own struggles and failures to build trust and connection.

Your Strategic Voice

Strategic communication amplifies your ideas, builds your influence, and inspires your team to achieve great things. By being intentional, audience-centric, and narrative-driven, you can lead with greater impact and authenticity.
